BER Certs Statistics Q1 2017
20,604 BER certs were published in the first quarter of 2017, this brings the total number of BERs surveys conducted since their introduction in 2009 to a total of 745,347 BERs. There was an increase in the BER surveys conducted in 2017 of 4.9% compared to the same period in 2016.
Detached and semi-detached residential dwellings are the most common house type to receive a BER rating since 2009, each house type represents 26% of all the houses that received a BER assessment. They also had energy ratings similar to each other with an estimated 50% of each house type receiving a “C” BER certificate or higher. Mid floor apartments received the highest percentage of “A” & “B” BERs and at 30%. This can be seen in figure 1 below.
The county of Dublin received the highest “A” and “B” BER ratings at 21%. While Limerick city received the lowest proportion of “A” and “B” houses in the country.
Dublin 18 had the highest proportion of “A” and “B” rated BERs at 38% with the dwellings having an average age of 17 years. While Dublin 7 had the greatest percentage of a combination of “F” and “G” BER ratings at 27%, these dwelling had a combined average of 56 years old. Dublin 10 houses had an average age of 42 years old was the only Dublin postal address that does not have an “A” or “B1” rating in a BER certificate.
Statistics on BER Certs heating types
Heating oil and mains gas are still the most popular main space heating systems accounted through BER assessments with 78% of all houses heated by them. This is followed by electricity with 15% as the next popular method to heat a house. The houses that use mains gas as heir primary heat source 20% were rated as an “A” or “B” this is compared with only 9% for home heating oil.
Dwelling constructed between 2010 and 2017 the majority are heated with main gas at 58%, 23% are heated with Electricity and only 17% are heated with heating oil. Apartments that received BER rating surveys showed that gas was the main source of heating. While 71% of detached homes were heated with oil.
Detached dwellings at 156 m2 have the highest average floor area of all BER certs assessed. Houses built during the 1900-1929 period had the primary average energy use (408 kWh/m2/year), along with the highest average CO2 emissions (101 kgCO2/m2/year).
